Birdsong
The air resounds with warbles and tweets
It's easy to imagine rejoicing tunes
Fluttering on the gentle breezes of Spring
But my mind's eye knows that in truth
Every sweet tone and dulcet chirp
Is a battle cry
Finches and pigeons vie for patches of ground
Competing for resources
Trying to starve out the competition
Cute, petty wars that revolve around breadcrumbs and paved stones delight children and young at heart
But my perception sees the grand feathered dinosaurs that were their forebears
Tramping out fern forested riverside with accompanying trumpets and whistle-growls
A carnage of survival
Flesh rent by mighty fangs
And greedy claws
Tamed only by millions of years of evolutionary drift.
