And if the heart can't have what it wants?

The heart wants what it wants
the mind knows it can't have it
the fingers write to ease the pain
the head goes hatless in the rain

the eye looks kindly on your face
the face lights in your company
the vocal chords hem, haw, and stutter
the giddy schoolboy butterflies flutter

the cheek unwanted sometimes reddens
the pulse at your kind word oft quickens
the heart, the heart wants what it wants
the mind loves on in silence.
