A Mind Off-Grid, Nr.13 - Affirmative Action
When I arrived in the middle of nowhere
at his low eco-footprint yurtstead
and had fought my way past the giant pumpkins
to the yoga terrace strewn with beer bottles
he was practising affirmations:
“The sun shines out of my arse …
“The sun shines out of my arse …
“The sun shines …
“… are you alright Fred?” I asked.
He slowly turned his craggy face and bushy beard
towards me, opening his eyes -
“Josh, haven’t you noticed the weather of late?"
“Sure, cloudy. And lots of rain”.
“Precisely - battery bank’s flat”.
‘Of course’ I thought ‘beliefs are powerful things.
They run entire lives. But solar electricity …??’

LOL! This is like a cloud with a silver lining - the silver lining being the humorous aspect of an interesting topic.

Thank you for noting that. I hadn't thought of the aspect of 'every cloud has a silver lining'.

Thank you Crim for commenting.
"he thinks the sun shines out of his arse ..."
... old northern expression reserved for people who have an overly high opinion of themselves.

Thank you - hope the day is still emerging in a fun way.
Australian bushman? - I can see that. But then again it's also all the crazy misfits from Northern Europe (mainly Dutch, English, Belgian, German) who seem to end up here in central-north Portugal. Amazing percentage of artistically-minded people too.

The title got me and then the rest of the poem shed light (pun intended).
Great piece sir.

Thanks Wally. There's lots of crazy off-gridders here, who are all wonderful people and my inspiration. :))
Re. Affirmative Action
I really enjoyed the beginning as you make your way through the pumpkins and beer bottles ... it seems if one has consumed enough of a substance ... anything is possible ... lol

Thank you Jemac. Affirmations have their limitations, as I found out during my yuppie days of the 1980s (eg: "Think and Grow Rich" by Napolean Hill, actually published in 1937 amazingly, and the grandaddy of self-help positive-thinking).

Thank you Daniel. Off-gridders live in wonderfully specialised worlds - then again, don't we all :))

Lol I practically practice this mantra daily Josh. It helps me to counter the established neural paths where I tell myself, "You suck. You fuck everything up." 25 years as a redheaded stepson to a belligerent megalomaniac. People are indeed every flavor of crazy. 🙏💖

Solar heating maybe. But electricity? I have my doubts. Excellent write, Josh.

Ha! Thank you. Central Portugal is full of estrangeiro 100% off-gridders (I'm half off-grid - own water, use mains elec) - trying to grow their own food and get away from 'the system'. It's a noble effort and makes for interesting people and stories (with a bit of poetic licence).
Re. Affirmative Action
Oh Dear Departed Mother of Mine...
ain't one of us not a bit strange...
there's places on Earth that seem to attract
nothing but
us odd ones
may the sainted ones preserve us...
sooner or later
I expect we'll get it right
if we can only shake this,
"nervous as a rabbit down a foxhole"...syndrome. hugs, Ely

Thanks for visiting again Ely. Not only off-gridders live in highly specialised worlds :))

I like to think of myself as a specialist of the general - though I'm not sure how that squares with "jack of all trades, master of none"
