WELL EXAMINED POET
Am I simply a showman, raconteur,
writing to please an audience,
growing smaller by the day?
Or are my readers unintentional voyeurs?
Unable to avert their gaze.
My large, smudge ridden, soulfront window
provides a perfectly cloudy view.
A dimly lit surgeon’s theater
wherein my overexposed cerebrum
Is by myself poked and probed.
As in tandem I take fastidious notes.
Whether to stroke my vanity
Or maintain a modicum of sanity.
I just gotta write.

I personally write for both the reasons you mentioned - personal sanity and ego-stroking. I'd be lying if I said I don't crave the validation at least some of the time. So what?! If writing didn't feel good on some level, none of us would do it. We humans need stroking....

Thank you, Titanium! You express so our similar motivations for writing. Validation really is important to me as well...somehow I've programmed to be somewhat ashamed for needing validation. I appreciate your clarity as well on this point. I am glad you like the piece.😁

Seems to me we all suffer a ridiculous amount of shame for being human, especially in our individualistic culture.... we should really hold each other and ourselves with more grace.
