Chrysalis Wombs
a butterfly
lifts off to fly
to Mexico
the reason why
unfathomable
to human minds
in Mexico
is where it finds
the place once left
so long ago
four times removed
grandparents slow
journey north
as milkweed blooms
to Canada
through chrysalis wombs
'til summer ends
when solstice turns
each butterfly
then yearns and yearns
for Mexico
so far away
and flutters south
day after day...
a mystery
like any seen
how it returns
where it's not been

Author's Note
every spring Monarch butterflies leave the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico and fly north breeding on the way to arrive in southern Canada where they breed over the summer...come autumn the butterflies begin a massive migration back to the same small area in Mexico, however the southward migrating butterflies are 4 or 5 generations removed from those who left in spring...

I remember seeing a programme of Monarch Butterflies ages ago - what an amazing 'lifestyle' - and I find your poem captures something of that grand mystery.

amazing creatures...how many humans can return to the place our great great grandparents lived without anyone telling them the way...thanks for comment
