Tell me blackbird

Tell me blackbird why do you sing?
I have asked many times before yet
am no wiser . . . . . .you do not answer
I don't think you know. perhaps
to accuse you such is unfair, maybe
I should climb your tree,or take
a ladder to the tiles, see the view
from which you sang today and
yesterday,the day before,tomorrow
and every other day that would be. l
would be without you but less.Yes
I'll take the ladder, sit upon the tiles
and sing. Will you stay and listen?
What shall I sing, a simple song?
Extemporised as yours?
Or take the violin, practice, as
you have done these thousand years
until the notes fly pure above the leaves
lost to all but memory, perhaps to know
why you sang today,yesterday
the day before and shall tomorrow
