FIRST LOVE

When first we met
she was 12 and I 17
Tanya I called her
a petite Japanese gem
of royal blood

Before “Lolita” imaginings
like wildfires rage
my steely paramour
was an ivory, 1969 Toyota Corona
a seductive 4 door beauty.

My lady was a rescue, as was I.
she from the junkyard…
me from cycling nightmare
sold by the sister of a friend.
what price love? $100.

Like everyone…
She had her good and bad side
her's was the rear driver's side.
poor thing rolled down a steep, San Francisco hill,
jumped the curb, and kissed a tree...HARD!

She ran like a top...whatever that means
and let me tell you, my Tanya had no brakes.
no really , literally no brakes!
with horror discovered at a red traffic light
where motorist customarily stop...she didn't
a high maintenance woman.

Our affaire de coeur lasted a year.
ending in a cloud of white smoke.
blown head gasket, warped block the diagnosis
though repaired she remained incontinent…
pools of oil everywhere

Sadly we said our adieu’s.
sold to a co-worker for 75 bucks.
one day the devastating letter came
she was found laying abandoned in a ditch.
oh my sweet Tanya...you deserved better
