Luna (For my Mother)

You saw me in the pastures
With newborn rays in my eyes.
You said I could not go…
I said I would always be part of you
For as long as the sky is blue.

When you see the moon, I am dancing,
If you touch the clouds, I will cry.
You say you love me as I love you
For as long as the dawn is new.
While it rains and the wind sighs
I will look deep into your eyes
See our souls when we were young.
Under branches of berries and sprites
When more than dreams filled all our nights.

You said I must not go,
But onward the river must flow.
I was a star this morning,
The last to leave the sky,
And though I am never returning
Although I had to die
I will love you until the sea is dry,
I will look down into your eyes.
There, every day is summer eve.
I kiss you and I know you are my dear,
I love for as long as the sky is clear.

Author's Note
My mother used to raise goats. She had one in particular named Luna. Luna was attacked by a ferocious hound shortly after her birth. After a visit to the vet and a miracle, Luna lived for almost two years. I had written a poem following her death at such a young age. Tonight, my mother said she wished she could find it. Knowing it was buried under a stack of newer poems, I decided to write a new one instead. It is much better than the original.
