'tis better not to marry than to burn
perchance fate leaves love’s passions taciturn
go kiss a mountaintop and celebrate
the joys known only to the celibate

a simple lesson fickle souls must learn
‘tis better not to marry than to burn
your eve might slyly to her serpent run
and leave conjugal liberties undone

a wanton kiss may spark a frantic flame
ere fate decides love’s but a passing game
‘tis better not to marry than to burn
for stagnant beds afford no safe return

i am resolved not to be disavowed
by morning passions that at evening cloud
the heart and leave the broken soul to yearn
‘tis better not to marry than to burn
