Weeping for the World
In silent solitude, I weep;
In suffering for this wondrous world.
Depriving me of precious sleep:
My greatest fears have come unfurled.
I weep for starving children,
As we overpopulate the Earth.
For people born in poverty,
Emaciated at their birth.
I weep for homelessness,
For people dying on the street;
As people pass them by
And watch them suffer at their feet.
I weep for mental illness,
For broken families; broken homes.
I weep for the abuse;
And for those who feel like they're alone
I weep for nations waging war,
Such senselessness and selfishness.
A thousand bodies on the floor...
Even children, in their helplessness.
I weep for global climate change,
As the ocean tides begin to rise -
With warming waters getting hotter
Nothing will survive.
I weep for waning forests
As we harvest all the trees,
Then turn them into money
To exacerbate our disease.
I weep for all the animals
Whose homes have been destroyed;
At the barren wasteland left behind...
But a dull and lifeless void.
I weep for willful ignorance,
For prejudice and hate;
I weep for inequality,
As racial tensions escalate.
The evils of this planet
Are sometimes far too much to bear,
And that is when I weep...
To show the world I care.
In suffering for this wondrous world.

Thank you, Fenyx... I'm glad you enjoyed it, though it's kind of depressing. Perhaps another day I will give reasons to smile instead :)

Aww, thank you so much, summer. Sometimes sorrow fills the cup and, thus, must overflow the brim a bit...
Your RL and kind words really mean a lot - I appreciate you!

Unfortunately many humans just don't care
I think it's a human trait not to care
Easier to destroy and make a few bucks
Thankfully some of us fight against it and open our eyes to caring possibilities
Though we are and will always be in a minority till its to late and unreversable
Beautiful poem 💓

From an evolutionary standpoint, we are inherently selfish beings, evolved to ensure the survival of ourselves and our offspring. With this belief system, we only do for others to give ourselves some kind of fulfillment, or to ensure our own survival or happiness. For example, I love animals because they make me happy, therefore I want to help animals because they help me to be happy, and giving back gives me a sense of self-worth. With that said, perhaps even those who give back in this way are rarities, as not everyone gets enjoyment out of helping others - some people would rather not, or just aren't willing to go out of their way to,
Now, this conflicts with my spiritual side, which believes in true selflessness, giving with expectation of anything in return, and by definition - lack of consideration of thyself.
My optimistic side believes that even without pure selflessness, there are plenty of people out there that care, even if they aren't willing to take the extra step to do something about, yet my cynical side argues that we're a minority. I don't know what to believe sometimes... heh. I know I am probably rambling at this point :P
Thanks for the RL and read. It means a lot that others enjoy my poetry so much :)

This is a wonderful, yet provocatively urgent, sermon to the soul of the world, NewB. If only the soul could have a heart...we could then, instead of lamenting earth's atrocities, sing with Louis Armstrong in this consonant yet antithetical reflection:

Thank you for your commentary, cab! It is much appreciated! Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I have been busier than ever and haven't had much time for poetry, unfortunately.

That's wonderful comment, AEMelia, thanks so much stopping by! If people spend more time thinking about these things, we would be more prone to act to better the planet... or we might just be depressed - heh.
P.S. Sorry for my hiatus - just letting you know that you are appreciated :)

As a fellow-biologist, nature lover, and something of a loner, I click with this poem. Mustn't let it all get more than one can bear. We do what we can. If enough of us do a little, things must change.
Thanks and be of good heart.

Thank you, Ammonite. I feel like you understand where I'm coming from. It can be overwhelming sometimes, really, but you are right - we do what we can. I appreciate your heartfelt comment.

This is all too real and I absolutely love it. One thing that I personally look for when I'm reading anything is the imagery; I love being able to picture what the writer is talking about. And, man, does this poem paint a picture. Beautiful poem, truly.

This is very impactful, great job. I noticed how you ended your phrases with strong words for each of the topics and it really shows your talent in writing. I always love alliteration and I enjoyed the section on trees. And the alliteration, along with the extra syllable on the last line, makes disease really stand out like an unwanted word.

Hey Russell,
Thanks for your wonderful compliments and your in-depth analysis of my poetry. I thank my subconscious mind for the usage of 'strong words'. I feel some intense emotions when I think about some of atrocities and sorrows in the world, which spills into my poetry.
P.S. Sorry for taking so long to reply to this comment. I haven't been using this website as much lately, but I appreciate you!

I like the way you took me on a tour round the world, seeing the vices and ills of society. Sadly only few people weep for the world.
