Beyond the Walls

It was so quiet I could hear the walls breathe,
So quiet my thoughts could conceive
And be heard in a world filled
With chaos. I could hear the spilled
Rain against the window stop and
The world is beautiful. With my hand
Over my heart I could hear it
Breathe again, like the pulse that will fit
Perfectly within my veins. I could
Close my eyes, knowing that I would
Be safe within my body because
It gives me life and love. I pause,
Knowing damn well that we are
Never given many precious moments to forget the scar
We are born with and to see
The world beyond destruction. The walls know me
Because they recognize my tears and held
My secrets. They have become my dwelling
Place where I could be safe and secure,
Knowing that I could experience or endure
Any emotion like happiness or pain.
There are days when the rain
Becomes too difficult to face
And all you want is to be in a place
That you call home. No one
Judges you because the sun
And walls do not have eyes,
Only ears. They know goodbyes
Are hard to come by. They
Know that all you want is for them to stay
For more than one moment when all
Is quiet and still. The wall
Is still a wall and the sun is still
A sun. The world has not lost its thrill
Nor its touch. The wall can teach
Us a thing or two. How to reach
Beyond the surface, how to be firm
And when to be quiet. Never squirm
Away from the hard truth.
