Based on a fanciful picture of a Pictish woman, engraved by Theodore de Bry, ca 1590. I last came across it used by Peter Mancall, to illustrate a biography of Richard Hakluyt (Hakluyt was an Elizabethan expert on maps and geography and had a powerfull influence on the establishment of English colonies in Virginia etc). I have photoshopped the de Bry engraving a little, to remove some of the lady's weaponry.

Because she is wearing nothing but woad! The spears in her right hand were an irrelevant distraction IMHO.

It's not a good limerick but I'm pleased it amused you. When I heard a radio programme recently, about anti-social behaviour, it ocurred to me that it was potentially a mondegreen (eg: county surveyor/countess of ayr). The necessities of grammar stop it working properly :-(
