On Reading Poetry

read me slowly, take your time
savour me like deep, red wine
drink my words in measured sips
inhale the letters held to your lips

devour too fast and lose its meaning
the poet, the words, and you: a teaming
to bathe in lyric's metered rhyme
odist wash aesthete's mind

a pace, a canter, a country stroll
each verse a journey and not the goal
to stop and breathe the sense a while
the rapture of a heart's beguile

so contemplate when reading verse
like mourners' pace behind the herse
and when you reach the bottom, then
ascend once more and drink again
