Image for the poem a new refrain

a new refrain

were there a way
to unpluck that rose
to unbreak that promise
to retract that word
that arrowed from my quiver
and bruised
your gentle spirit

were there a way
to turn back time
and fix the breaches
i’ve left behind
and go back and listen
to the words you tried
to tell me yesterday

were there a way
to hug the nighttime sky
and dream a little dream
under the moon
of waking to a better day
when circumstance were
less irrational

were there a way
to carry back the sun
to where the morning
greets the green horizon
and dances fluting birds
out of their nests
and blooms new roses
in my mother’s garden
and dabs my joyful feet
with healing dew
and sings new songs
along the riverbank

i’d swallow my pride
and pick up my pieces
and find my way
back home
to kiss you again
and banish the pain
that triggered  the tears
that flooded the years
that wounded the heart
that tore us apart

for a new refrain
would echo from your bosom
as we circumvent death’s
dark and lonely
chasm…
