Grave

Far away to the grass and sands
Of a shore where stands a grave;
Who is buried here?
I have set my eyes on clouds so white and high,
And I could alter my soul if I lay a single rose.

Far out where the waters meet the sky,
Somewhere deep within your eyes,
I see the faces we dared to leave behind.
And you slam the door and say you’re so in love.
But you never walked with me across the stones and beds,
The solitude where you should have been awoke the pain in me.

I could have read the names in the falling snow.
We could have walked home in the cold,
With the wraiths like candles in our hands,
As the stars lay hidden from view.
If only you would have turned to me
There would be faces in my heart,
And voices in my blood.
If only you had whispered to my bones
That the grave upon the shore was mine
We could have laid side-by-side inside the sky.
I never knew a more beautiful love than your own.
If only you had turned to me…
