Alone On Christmas Day

I went to the city today
I saw a dog with a man
He was disheveled in many ways
He was sitting by a trash can

His shoes were full of holes
His clothes were old and torn
He had a tent up against a pole
His clothes were rather worn

I had all kinds of things in my trunk
I parked and proceeded to give him a coat
I wasn't sure if he was a drunk
He was happy and cleared his throat

I had several pairs of shoes
He told me his size
There were plenty he could choose
I saw tears in the man's eyes

I gave him a new mat
That he could sleep on
A pair of gloves and a hat
He told me his name was John

We walked over to a food stand
I ordered food for him and his dog
He was pleased and held my hand
I also bought him some eggnog

He told me about his life
How he ended up on the street
How he lost his wife
His life now was bittersweet

I gave him a number to a shelter
Told him to call them some time
I handed him a brand new sweater
He told me he's seen many crimes

I went into my car and got some treats
For his dog to enjoy
I wanted them both to eat
Give them both a little joy

I handed him an envelope
Filled it with some green backs
I was hoping he wouldn't buy dope
He was overjoyed by my kind act

I told the man goodbye
I wished him a merry christmas
I saw that he started to cry
I was happy to provide assistance
