Jake

It came for him
Quietly in the shadows
Lurking undetected
But the devil would reveal its face

We knew its name and it shook us
He stood fast
Unwavering in the coming storm
Facing it with a smile

Humor and grace were weapons of choice
A pillar of strength unmatched
As the black consumed his mortal shell
Robbing the world of his light

Death thinks it has won today
As we carry the warrior on his shield
It merely freed him from his bonds
The spirit of the man endures

Dwelling peacefully among the stars
Casting his light from above
Driving out the shadows
Protecting those he loves

He calls to us from memories
Evoking laughter and tears
Stoking the fire of his energy
That still surrounds us all

Author's Note
I wrote this about my best friend who was recently taken far too soon. My words hardly encapsulate the type of person he was but I felt like I owed it to him to try. He was a constant source of positivity and humor in my life. I learned how to laugh at myself and not take life too seriously because of him. He taught me how to face the toughest moments in life with dignity. He was the type of friend that anybody would love to have. I will forever be grateful for the time we had together. Rest in peace brother.
