the tide eventually takes the driftwood back out to sea
Maybe one day you'll look back
and wonder where I am and how I'm doing
and you'll ask yourself how did we get so far away
It starts like this...
with life and love and innocence
too busy to talk every day
so we talk every week
and then every month
and then every other month
until we can't remember the last time we heard each others voices
We have lives and jobs and lovers and kids
people die, people are born
we get our hearts broken
we fall apart
we pick up the pieces and start again
we change jobs, change careers
join unemployment for a while
we move house, move towns, move states
We find reasons not to finish
that text message and hit send
we mean to call but don't
tell ourselves the timing isn't right
we'll do it later
we're just too busy
'cause there will be time
...some other time
Until one day we wake up
and wonder what happened to that person
we used to know in another lifetime
that we somehow let drift away
