Burgundy Bliss

The burgundy bliss began with the first glass
quick sips away from the control of a home life,
free from the watchful eye of compounded anger
and total disinterest.

He could take a breath and absorb the energy
of those dressed up for an evening of fun;
laughing, dining, flirting
longing to be a part of it, but rarely getting that chance.

He felt a little more comfortable with glass number two
and watched a woman alone at her table;
looking to her phone and to the door
obviously expecting a companion
who had left her to order another drink
and wait.

He could read the anticipation in her body language
and decided drink three would be needed to approach

They spilled out into the quiet street
after last call and scanned for a cab
but they were deserted under the light drizzle of rain.

His intention was to get her home safely,
but neither were legally in shape to drive;
he was reaching for his cell when she planted a kiss on him,
one to test to see if it would be returned,
and if it could lead them to something further

He found her mouth pleasing and not only reciprocated
but pulled her body tight against his as they fed on the opportunity
allowing her to feel his appreciation
and to remind her sometimes
that it wasn't always a loss to be stood up.
