Sea Siren
Her petticoat weighs heavy
In the heat.
The hem dusted by clinging sand. Delicate flesh blushing beneath so many layers.
She carries herself along the shoreline,
waves cresting softly in the heat.
She plays with the waves as they reach for her in small drifts.
The sand covered in tiny bubbles as they recede.
Here, she is quite alone,
nestled among the large rocks strewn on the shore.
The longing to feel the cool waters on her flesh becomes her only thought.
She carefully removes her dress,
button by button,
carefully folding it and hiding it among the rocks.
In her thin white cotton underdress,
she slowly makes her way into the depths.
Waves lapping at her form.
She dreams of these moments, when her soul demands freedom.
Once up to her waste she bends and dives beneath the surface.
Her dress and long locks billowing and floating around her.
She dances with the waves,
pulling her in and out in a dreamy embrace.
She slowly surfaces to take breaths before submerging into the depths.
Sea life and small shells cling to her hair and dress.
She dives for pearls, coral, and starfish. Small fish swarm and gently caress her as she swims,
finding safety in the folds of her dress. She is being transformed by the ocean, blending into the blues and greens.
Her hair drenched with a spectrum of color, elegantly tangled with golden starfish and pink pearls.
Slipping out of the water onto rocks,
she looks down at what has happened to her.
She has been beautifully transformed. Her dress pressed firmly about her legs sparkles, shimmers with silvery scales. Shells of every color adorn her bodice. The scent of the sea impassioned on flesh, sweet and salty.
She has become what she always dreamed,
a mermaid of the sea,
free to sing her siren song.
