Liner Notes on a Lifetime of Repentance
God’s driving by in a Mercedes
And you’re in your boxers
Smoking a cigarette
On the side of the freeway
Outside of Vegas
Trying to hitch a ride.
The tequila, the bourbon
The dry mouth
And tobacco scorched throat;
They leave you like that
Sore and remorseful
On the shoulder
Of bum-fuck nowhere
Looking for a savior
In the passing headlights
PAIN: sunburns, blistered feet, cold sores
The clap, VD, emphysema, COPD, whatever
PAIN is good
When discernment is lost
Numb is painful, and the pain is numbing
And the brilliant
The most educated and erudite,
Mere animals
And an animal
Numb
And blind, dead
To his own soul
Will kill you
On his way to the grave,
While the idiot
Nursing a hangover
Sometimes puts the booze down
If just for a
Day
And a day quite often
Is all it takes
As wisdom and brilliance
Are not the same.
And you’re in your boxers
Smoking a cigarette
On the side of the freeway
Outside of Vegas
Trying to hitch a ride.
The tequila, the bourbon
The dry mouth
And tobacco scorched throat;
They leave you like that
Sore and remorseful
On the shoulder
Of bum-fuck nowhere
Looking for a savior
In the passing headlights
PAIN: sunburns, blistered feet, cold sores
The clap, VD, emphysema, COPD, whatever
PAIN is good
