daddy's girl

it's a country morning...
I'm listening to the old songs
the ones I heard as a little girl safe at home
always puts me in the mood of my dad
crop duster pilot, pickup driving, shit kicker
guess you could call him a redneck

I never really knew my dad
only as much as he ever let me
he was a writer
never knew that about him
not tell he died
that's when I first met my dad

he was always too hard to approach
too gruff in his speech
but there was never a doubt I was his little girl
I adored him...
would watch for his pickup truck
every day from our window

he started visiting my thoughts
after I started writing
strange I know but I believe he comes to me
when my mind is quiet
talks to me about my life
says he's proud of me

when the dead speak you listen
seems he has lot's to say these days
never one for talk
seems he's changed his ways

I love you, dad...
