Back in the Day aka Dingy NYC

Remember those years in the tiny walk up
You were writing erotica hoping to get discovered
I was working on my doctorate in sin
Running projection at that porn theater in Times Square
That was dingy NYC
Long before organic

When Holly was working the Lincoln Tunnel entrance
You could get a quick suck for five bucks
Nobody cared if she had too many teeth
or if she was really a she
Life was less complicated back then

Holly bought mouthwash in industrial quantities
Hygiene on the fly still important
A woman still needs some dignity

If any money was left over at the end of the month
We went to the Scorpion bar on 14th between B and C
No hipsters back then
Just real people in dollar store clothes
Happy for a few snorts and a couple of rot gut chasers

There's no happy ending
Continuance is all you get
It was a soiled life
We got older and then got real jobs
Then we got better clothes
The mac and cheese life rolled over

Looking back it was romantic in a dime store way
We laughed at our poverty
Grateful to have had the moment
A love affair in sordid NYC
We didn't overdose
That was good
