Ode to a Rose

I saw a single red rose
Amid a sea of frost
She stood proud and strong
So much like you
Defiant in the face of winter

The sun glistened on her
Adorning her with
Crystalline drops of dew
Ruby petals so like your lips
I could scarce look away

But I could see
Despite her glorious hue
The weakening, wilting edges
Of her once virulent petals
Submitting to the inevitable chill

I couldn’t bear to watch her fade
I plucked her, put her close to my heart
To offer some protection from the cold
So that though she weakens
She does not do so alone

Her scent drifted up to me
Much as yours still touches my nose
And I felt I carried a piece of you
Even though you are not here
Even though I’m left alone.
