It’s a Marvel(ous) Life
I was never really into dolls
loved comics, cartoons instead
tree houses, tonka trucks
playing heroes in the glade
I cannot say I ever pretended
I was the wealthy Janet Van Dyne
floating o'er flowers a butterfly
or stinging enemies as a wasp
I was never The Cat, ebony-black
with a quiet, graceful prowess
such a sleek, stealthy movement
undetected in the dark
Nor was I a flaring Medusa
despite my waist-length hair;
an inhuman, immortal creation
with deadly locks for snares
I cannot say I was anyone
the great Stan Lee gave life
from his visionary world
Marveled by kids and adults
What I was, and am, is myself
For what Lee taught me most of all
was that every day humans
mirror these superheroes
within their heart-of-hearts
Super-humans coming to the rescue
against a villainous evil force
with strength to overturn a burning car
rescuing a trapped passenger inside
Extended lengths of holding breath
drag a drowning victim from the lake
Running faster than a speeding bullet
to push a pedestrian from being hit
Delivering the hungry healthy meals
clothing and medical needs
rescuing strays from their death
are superhero qualities
We believe in our solar plexus
through enduring action and faith
that destruction or mistakes
will give way to better days
With this knowledge we contain
a piece of Lee’s imagination
because humanity, undoubtedly
was his one true inspiration
And perhaps, he reminded us
in this Marvel(ous) Life we have
we're all superheroes of love
in the soul of our own skin

That's what the comics were all about. Inspiring children and young adults that everyone was unique with their own powers in their own ways; but even the mosted gifted had their fair share of problems too. Superheroes were human and humans were superheroes. ❤

Nice poetic education on American comics ... like Dartford, on this side of the pond, the Beano ruled with Desperate Dan, Minnie the Minx & Gnasher (her dog), Roger the Dodger, Lord Snooty and (my favourite) Billy Whizz.

My cousin, Bob Larkin had been a protege of Stan's at Marvel for decades.
Unfortunately, last I heard, Bob's in hard times since his wife died.......there some bad-blood with his daughters, & somehow they legally took him to the cleaners....claiming a lifetime of originals of his artwork, royalties, blah blah. This all comes thru his sister who communicates regular with my sister. I'm sure there's more to the story, but it seems a very sad situation for families to do shit like that. Personally, i've had no contact with Bob since my mother died in '97. ---------------------------

Biography
Bob Larkin began his career as an illustrator in 1969[2] and his many credits include titles such as Crazy Magazine, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu, Marvel Preview, Marvel Super Special, Planet of the Apes, Savage Sword of Conan, and The Tomb of Dracula. Larkin painted covers for many of the Marvel Fireside Books paperback collections, lending them a simple, movie-poster feel. He did the same thing for the cover to the second major intercompany crossover, Superman and Spider-Man. In addition, Marvel occasionally tapped Larkin to paint covers for premiere issues of such comic book titles as Dazzler (March 1981) and The Saga of Crystar (May 1983).[3] A rare example of Larkin providing interior art is the three–page story "For the Next 60 Seconds" in Epic Illustrated #1 (Spring 1980).[4]
Besides his work for Marvel, Larkin has painted covers for Vampirella and The Rook (Warren Publishing), The Amazing Adventures of Holo-Man (Peter Pan Records), Lorelei: Building the Perfect Beast (StarWarp Concepts), and many others.[3]

We all need a hero, and I think his message was, it's ok to create one and believe in them, I always loved the Superman idea, and how universal love was exemplified in his expression. Your poem is a hopeful tribute to the super selves we can become, both creatively and in life :)
