The horse's mouth

There is a smell about the place
once a year and only on this Day
potatoes, sprouts and carrots
parsnips roasted brown and sweet,
washed down with more than's good
to celebrate a birth we've heard of
on our mothers' knee.

Should it not be true . . .
have we been deceived?
if so there is a loss for all.
I have read the Book as you,
not sure the tale is as it seems,.
read no further than the words
listened to the sermons.
The horse's mouth has many teeth
count them at your peril.
