Lull

Night lull between flare-ups has me cautious,
I’ve taken jolts repeatedly.
Quivering from the work of a stun gun,
Beyond sundowner’s flash and gust.

The murderous mandatory evacs,
They’ve uprooted the missing ones.
Who now wander in their ghosted night walk,
Their cries are drowned by the silence.

I listen in quiet dread as winds rush
Between the lulls and front door frame,
Where the chilled breath of their howls infiltrate
I offer my bare floor to rest.

And local news just reported before,
Another flare-up, no pity.
In the time it took to swallow the moon,
A thousand acres to the torch.
