Algonquin roundtable #2

It could work
if only one had friends,
aquaintences to fill it.
instead I built a hotel in my mind.

we threw quips across the dining room,
heavy banter over biscuits,
they'd volley insult arrows
i'd volley laughs from being skewered.

it was all black comedy in good fun
for lunch if you could stomach it.
drifting
we would one by one fall victim
to our own personal endeavors,
pleasures,

departing without so much as a goodbye.
coming together from different daydreams
it was a pleasure to at least say hello
and preview the beauty in your eyes,

that was your life's work
coming to fruition.

The Algonquin Round Table was a group of New York City writers, critics, actors, and wits. Gathering initially as part of a practical joke, members of "The Vicious Circle", as they dubbed themselves, met for lunch each day at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929. At these luncheons they engaged in wisecracks, wordplay, and witticisms.
