The Sistahs

My generation was so
Politically and culturally
Conscious
(And a lot, most of them
Weren’t scholars either)
That it was
Sickening sometimes
Even for me
Conscious not only
About language
The company
They were in
And clothing
But accessories too
Apparently
Reading into things
Too much
This time
The sistahs
Were coming down on me
About the “slave bracelet”
“It’s a fashion statement
Guys
Not an insignia
Or a mnemonic
Don’t take it so
Literally
You’re seeing things
That aren’t there.
You know me
You know my character
So…
What’s the problem?”
I had so many of them
Too.
Another philosophical
Debate.
And I can’t even
Remember how it went;
In one ear and out the other.

Speaking of which
There was the black lesbian ball,
Black lesbian picnic
And black planet…another time.
