She is Free

She is Free

Riding the midnight bus to New Orleans
In the thick of the lonely night
Headed for whatever fate decrees
My beloved walks down the row
And sits next to me in my solitude
She rests her head on my shoulder
Like a ghost looking for something
From a past, she needs to return to
I rise through the layers back to reality
Where I lie in bed asleep in the morning
My truest love walks in from the great beyond
And takes her rightful place
Facing my back where she lies against me
I feel her breath upon me
And there begins my refrain
“Why not take your cancer meds?
What do you have to lose?”
But the struggle is over
And cancer has not won
For she is free
