Nocked up

it was hot and a long drive to the only clinic.

She drank the tea and was out. Damm you Reb she slurred.
Got that sack of potatoes in the pickup and drove  to  Jimmy. He drives us as far as you can into the bayou, unloads the canoe.
I reach mammas.  Give the family whistle. Carry her  into momma's cottage and lay her on my bed.
She's up by mid morning. Momma has pancakes waiting.

I am outside up a tree meditating, Jenny quietly looks out then take off running. By afternoon, she is going in circles.  I keep my distance. She drops to her knees pounds the Earth, sobbing
"Rob I know you following me.  give up"
I Let her beg some more.
Silence comes up next to her, standing until she knows.

" Damm you" , hits at my boots.
After enough of that I turn,
walk away slow.
 She ain't gonna follow until...
I make sure to step on all the sticks.
I sing "someone's in the kitchen with..."     She dashs thru mammas back screen door.
I lay awake. not much for talk.
the birds wake me up a while before morning.  Make it to her side.
Dawn pushes  onto mammas kitchen. Pots rattle pans, oranges squeezed, a couple fresh caught eggs frying.
Off to check my traps, get dry wood for the stove.
Ain't nothing like momma's fresh bread.
I pray my city girl will settle down some.
