Wallflower
a quiet girl observes
around the room
although she makes
eye contact
with you
only briefly, fleeting
she wonders
how you make
it look so easy
you, with your
casual yarning
laughter and charm
while she, silent
waits for her turn
and fumbles for
something to say
wishing she were
more down to earth
pretending that
everything’s okay
while the truth is
it hurts to smile
her cheeks are tired
and her teeth
are clenched
she starts to sweat
her face turns red
as she swiftly exits
but no one noticed

I believe it takes some more time than others to feel comfortable in their surroundings. Different personalities and all.

The first encounters are always the toughest. Thank you for your words Tim 🙏
Re. Wallflower
Anxiety is no joke, especially when someone has experienced something traumatic in their past. At least she went! There's that!
And some people simply don't like crowds; they feel drained by them. As long as she accepts how she is without blame, and works toward what she truly wants one step at a time, she will survive to tell a great tale and lead by example one day.

I am fortunate to have supportive people in my life, who also know what anxiety is like. This occasion was a great leap for me, but so worth it!
Your remarks are heart touching, thank you for your support Ahavati ❤️

I warmed plenty of benches at school dances. Anxiety can be the gorgon's stare that leaves one petrified. As for the poem, it's rock solid with flow from start to finish.

I must echo all of the above and ad this:
Wallflowers come in a variety of species. Some open colorful petals hoping to attract notice while others keep their buds hidden, possibly for fear their hues will not be bright enough or their nectar sweet enough to be enjoyed. Yet, there is another, these are the ones that sit quietly, storing away the nutrients they gather simply by watching and listening.
These are the ones that later bloom into poets and poetesses, such as yourself, offering their vast reservoir of knowledge and observation engulfed within a multitude of radiant color and luxurious texture, possibly helping to nurture yet another growing wallflower.
Truly impressed with your presentation here.

This captures so well the human-ness of anxiety in certain social settings. Maybe she's an introvert in an extrovert's world.

Indeed Josh, an INTJ. I am ever approaching the limits of my comfort zone though, in hopes to grow and blossom.

I'm an INFP (at least I was 20 years ago when I did the Myers-Briggs). The test results were as about much "I" as you could get. I think I'm a bit more balanced now having developed an extrovert persona that handles being 'on stage' - but it's exhausting. I still recharge my batteries from solitude.

I think balance is the key to many things. Once I’m comfortable with people I can be quite bubbly, but I’m still an introvert at heart and need that solitude to recharge as well. You might be interested in reading the poetess AtoMikBomb’s poetry on these personality types, just a suggestion :)

I like what Teri, Josh and Melia had to say about your poem. I enjoy that it is real and vulnerable. I know what anxiety is like and you express it adroitly.
