Image for the poem South

South

i remember  
what it was like    
mining South    
loosening red clay    
soil unearthed    
increasing oxygen    
and nothing    
got under my nails    
but you    
as hours passed    
surveying      
iron-rich mud      
and sediment    
in a region    
wide open    
for harvest.
