Keep Writing

Don't fall
asleep
you have all
these promises to keep
your idle hands plan demise that you so wantonly idolize
do not nod off now in agreement with your own demise
do not fall asleep . . .
your head heavy with the dreamless promises of a soothing drift
slipping away so easily down the avenue of lost time into your coffin
the nails are crooked, bent and they've created a rift
there's grave dirt on this bed, the wooden casket is rotten
you've hammered the heads in wrong far too often
of course, the recourse is to rebuild, would you reuse the same wood you've gotten?
It will only further weaken upon future endeavors, spongy to the touch, crumble and soften
preserve those at rest in peace, if they may
do not nod your head that way . . .
do not fall asleep
you must continue to write, make any sound
even a peep
lest you awaken deeper than ever underground
no matter what as long as you can see and move, keep fighting
you have barely this scrap of meat on the bone of your identity left to be overpowered
if you lose one more piece of yourself because you do not keep writing
then you will be buried in a shallow grave, found by the hounds and your memory devoured.
