Ostrich
He manages to keep his wits
His head above the new turmoil
But barely, he may well succumb
To pressures that he now perceives
The complexities of daily life
All seemingly too much to bear
Demons come and devils go
With family circling overhead
He cringes as collectors come
Ultimatums up their sleeves
Demands made in dark of day
For money that went up in smoke
But he finally discerns a way
To eliminate all this demand
He takes the last bus to the sea
And sticks his head deep in the sand.
His head above the new turmoil
But barely, he may well succumb
To pressures that he now perceives
The complexities of daily life
All seemingly too much to bear
Demons come and devils go
With family circling overhead
He cringes as collectors come
Ultimatums up their sleeves
Demands made in dark of day
For money that went up in smoke
But he finally discerns a way
To eliminate all this demand
He takes the last bus to the sea
And sticks his head deep in the sand.

The title intrigued me, I thought... ostrich?
Then I saw the picture and thought... struisvogel :-)
I sometimes do that when everything becomes too much... sticking my head in the sand :-/
You made a great poem out of it... amazing flow (despite the dark subject)
"Demons come and devils go
With family circling overhead" > these lines really grabbed me...

Thanks for the kind and thoughtful comment, Duende. I may be a crowfly but I'm an ostrich at heart. I offered his buzzard relatives as a contrast.
I also keep avoiding the inevitable, with my head firmly in sand that tends to drift, sadly.

I think this encompasses perhaps the biggest issue around mental health disorders 'if I ignore it it will go away'. Interesting write on such a complex issue.

I tend to ignore problems, which makes them even worse. Thanks for the thoughtful comment Rjm!

I'm glad you've tackled this subject, Crowfly.
How many times have I had to battle "I don't want to know!" in my own head? (Answer - lots - and still do). I think it's probably a very common human experience - which is not surprising given the generally inhuman and unjust way society is structured. I agree with Rjm's comment above.

It is a complicated subject, and it can be willful ignorance or self-deception. With me it tends to be the latter. Thank you Josh!

Thanks for the sweet comment, Jackie. I'll invite the bill collectors in, and they will never be seen or heard of again..
