Scarborough Affair

the day saw me trembling
in my broken orchard thoughts
the wind blew magpies through my soul

my bewildered dawn of reckoning
spoke stars of wisdom in glass jars
they cast little light;
hidden in the closet of my dread

ghosts wept in my diary
they sought asylum;
from tear-stained pages
ripped out of my heart

captive midnights were angry
to be bound by desires unashamed
they fought the good fight and died inside

on all the moons I beheld your face
blackened by the night's shady double-dealing
in repose, I repent the day's bloody sunrise
the woman got to her feet
she kept her femininity secreted away

held for ransom emotionally bankrupt
a lady in anguish her lusts robbed
the thief, a clown made a prison break
escaped with his heart

while I grieved in the naked light;
of the Scarborough affair
inside the silence of my valentine
all my memories are laundered
kept, pressed and found to be fair
