Black Oblivion
After the day has broken all of the rules
And finally surrenders to the night
We stand beneath the sky’s black oblivion
Asking foolish and unlearned questions
Looking for answers from sermons long since retired
We are left with only great questions and small answers
Then in quiet observation we realize
That life is not about aligning all the stars of the zodiac
But rather entertaining fallen angels
On their long way down
And providing the certain proof
That no one can love the way we do
Because we feel more deeply
We know that to live is pain
And to die is an unknown existence
We live beyond tears
Punching above our weight
Our life a struggle
And in the darkness
We search for a friend at midnight
Who will say,
“Fair winds and following seas,
Go gentle on your way”
Yet we are frail children of dust
Like ships gone astray
Wondering without purpose
There is a fine line
For wisdom to walk
And it is hard to kick against the goads
We have no excuse for sin
So let us give love without measure
Asking nothing in return
So let us entertain
And finally surrenders to the night
We stand beneath the sky’s black oblivion
Asking foolish and unlearned questions
Looking for answers from sermons long since retired
We are left with only great questions and small answers
Then in quiet observation we realize
