CAMPING

All quiet
by dying campfire
alone she sits
crackling tinder
harmoniously blends
with crickets, frogs
a distant loon’s plaintiff call
wind whispering through trees
nocturnal symphony

Her hair in firelight
appears as radiant spun gold
eyes, fixed on the flames,
brilliant sapphires
gaze upward
by flying ember’s glow transfixed
they journey heavenward
to a star-filled pasture to dance
by a full resplendent moon shepherded

Yearns,
the moment to share
closed eyes
conjuring images
an absent lover
now wide open,  startled
there, shrouded in smoke
dream protagonist stands
seductive smile accentuates
glimmer in deep brown eyes

By elation overcome
reaching she grasps
his outstretched hand
sensual energies combine
their embrace electrified
hungry lips meet
completing passion’s circuit

Encircled in smoke
they slip the bonds of gravity
transported on waves of desire
atop a granite promontory landing
overlooking a lake of glass
celestial luminescence doppelganger
reflected on its surface

On stony bed
by Eros made warm and soft
naked they lay
beneath a blanket of stars
watched by a voyeurist moon

With luminous quartz crystal
he traces her every curve
caressing peaks and valleys
tender kisses
follow the light

He drinks deep
from her dark recesses
entering in
filling her with his light
fortissimo cries of ecstasy
join naturally
the nocturnal orchestra

She stirs awake
disoriented
the camp comes to life
surveys the scene
grinning, realizes
she slept the night
seated beside
the now cold fire pit

Her smile broadens
with satisfied sigh,
recalls her phantasmal lover
right hand clutches something hard
looking down at her now open palm
heart races,
every nerve tingles
there, a quartz crystal

Author's Note
I first published this piece in September of 2013. I revisited the piece and made it better. It was inspired by a muse who loves nature and camping as well as my longing to once again camp in the Sierra Nevada.
