A DEEPER LAIR OF DREAMING (6-25-03, 4:00am, Galveston Island, Texas)
up at four a m
to get a drink
of water
nestled in the stillness
of this dark
quiet night
i look outside
my window
startled by the sight
as regimented
clouds of white
passing by above
bottom lit
from lights below
left on all night long
across this islands
semi illumined grid
of faceless
sleeping masses
creating this dramatic show
high up overhead
of nocturnal skies
proceedings
migratory creeping
in silent infantries
of rolling morphing ghosts
marching steadily forth
from off
the sighing gulf
through swaying treetops
graceful dancing
outside just beyond
the subconscious grasp
of each enslumberred home
now all asnore
and dreaming
as floating caravans
of mounted troops
in white
slowly advance
to pass in stealth
covertly through
the outer sunken depths
of this life stilled
calm and peaceful
more broadly dreaming
still life night
where i
below here
pause beneath them
like some creeping
little mouse
alertly to observe
in my present
semi hypnogogic state
all caught up in
the inner silence
of my timeless wonder
while looking out
beyond
its my
nightly
though presently
forgotten
late night
quest for cheese
to check for any
cats about
on unseen
nightly prowl
yet only to find
to my delight
through all this
tranquil darkness
a quarter moons
friendly smile
hung crescent high
beaming down
diamond bright
peeking out
through billowed troops
passively passing by
in mysterious
silence overhead
flowing from the south
their motion pulling
like some mystic
moonlit river
soon lures me
back to bed
back into some other
even deeper
inner lair of dreaming
to slip adrift
away in
once more
yet again
much like these
rolling tumbling troops
of nocturnal
passing clouds
outside my bedroom
window
stealthily adrift
like unseen dreams
themselves
above this sleeping
island town
are each
and all
along with me
all presently adrift
aloft
here in this
our mutually shared
waking dreams
still unfolding
ghostly flowing
own prolonged
lucid deep
tranced out
sweet
somatic
pause
