Reticence
Only just a child
latchkey kid run wild
youth forever lost
Far too old when young
baby on a ladder rung
learning to climb alone
Abandoned and unprotected
reticence perfected
survival, nothing more
Building walls for preservation
dependence upon isolation
yet hardly staying safe
Harboured secrets meant to keep
now recalled in unquiet sleep
I suffer still in silence
latchkey kid run wild
youth forever lost
Far too old when young
baby on a ladder rung
learning to climb alone
Abandoned and unprotected
reticence perfected
survival, nothing more
Building walls for preservation
dependence upon isolation
yet hardly staying safe
Harboured secrets meant to keep
now recalled in unquiet sleep
I suffer still in silence

Brava Mel, are you certain we weren't raised in the same household 😊? "Latchkey kid run wild" is a perfect description...although my wild was tempered with religious guilt and therefore a more conservative wild 😀 Well composed, vulberable piece.

LOL! You and I...maybe:) My poor mother, bless her for my wildness! But I grew up far too early. Thank you lovely.

A real relatable write. Seems alot you keep to yourself sometimes its better that way. But comes out in pure talented well written verse.. Great read.

I wholeheartedly agree. Some things better left unsaid. Thank you for the lovely compliment:)

This flowing style is indicative of you becoming much more at ease and relaxed in your expression, Mel. Express those old ghosts right out the door and invite happiness in.
