Embers of the day
Lengthening shadows
foretell the shortening day
climbing neighbours' walls
seeking out garden sheds
clambering orchard trees
scrumping apples, darkened lawns,
gable ends of drowsing bungalows
slip into the shade; doors tight shut.
On they go 'til all is mute
and evening comes.
A blackbird basks on the gable,
one last cry defies moon and night,
Windows close, curtains drawn.
On walls fresh shadows flicker,
fires fade to sleep as Jack
renews his vigil at my feet,
staring at the embers of the day.
