NOT JUST ANOTHER DISH TO WASH

Clattering tea cups.
porcelain gems,
landing safely in my groove.
Like sweet music,
now rarely heard

Once invited to every party.
Best supporting actor
to the raised pinky set.
Of biscuits and finger sandwiches
Able to bear the weight

Now to back-of-cupboard relegated.
Functionality unappreciated.
Appalled by water ring plague
marring the surface of too many fine tables
A crime so easily prevented.
And me helpless to assist

A saucer separated
from my beloved cup.
Frankly I blame coffee and coffee houses.
Making humanity conform.
To insulated, impersonal paper containers
I vow to regain my place at service
