Human Layers

I am supposed to act tough and pull myself together,
But who will be there for me when I am feeling weak?
I need that extra dose to get through the bad weather
That surrounds me. Everything within me is at its peak
And breaking point. Who will catch me when I shatter?
Who will catch me when I fall and break into shards?
I am pieces of glass no one can step on. A pitter patter
Of my heartbeat echoing the sound of rain. Guards
Are on high alert so no one can hurt my heart or soul
Like that ever again. There are no promises of love
That is fulfilled, but I still crave and want it like coal
That burns; a human trait to connect. I am the dove
To help ease the pain and transition to another life.
I am that moment and instant just before you flat
Lined. I am all the sharp and dull edges to that knife
We come to hold so firmly in our hands. I am that
Hidden smile underneath the layers and complexity.
I am what helps you navigate through life’s perplexity.
