Highway Heat
inside the safety
of cars
they could not stand
being alone
zooming by, i slowed
maintaining the appropriate distance
we etablished a relationship.
She slowed a little
giving me a polite way to say goodbye
i slowed too
surely she had others
who let her fade away
in their rear view mirror
between me and her though,
this was real
after a minute i gradually sped up
she did likewise
i felt the joy of commitment
watching her smile
in my rear view
suddenly
i chose to test her out
how much did she truly care
rapidly i passed the car in front of me
she wavered, confused
but in a burst of speed
she passed that car between us
i felt her stare in the mirror
it was sort of puzzled
up ahead was the McDonalds
I slowly turned in
into the drive thru lane
burning with anticipation
then heavy with despair
as i saw her drive on by
where did i go wrong?
maybe this was a little harsh
my tyres squeeled out of line,
jumping the curb
i passed several cars on that two lane road going 90 miles an hour
i caught up with her
slowed myself up behind her
not too close
tailing to suit her speed
but something wasnt quite right
slowing ever so slightly
she sped up to keep pace with the
1976 Corvette ahead
aah well
there are more fish in the sea
of cars
they could not stand
being alone
zooming by, i slowed
maintaining the appropriate distance
we etablished a relationship.
