up against it

sometimes an indrawn breath gets stuck
somewhere between the moment
and ancient history
caught in a deadlock
as lungs burst into flame
trying to determine where the tripwire was
that set off this particular explosion
hurtling me backward into the past
choking on the smoke
and stinging from debris
tentatively touching all my scars
and expecting to still see bleeding
but they’ve already sealed
though still not fully healed
and nothing flows now but the pain
and me standing here
furious
because you tainted all my wiring
damaged the delicate frame
of a balanced and sensual being
impulses drowned out by internal screaming
cursing your face and your name
slowly sliding down the wall
a little girl who has no power
tears streaming and gasping for breath
damn you to hell for the detonation
that left your shrapnel all over me
and the flashbacks
and the nightmares
still haunting me
while you sleep peaceful and easy
happily dreaming
I’m still cleaning up your mess
