Perfect Confidence
I sometimes flush quite deeply when I rise
To greet you, though you look sharp as you stare;
You're silent as you watch me; I prepare
For you to pause and take me by surprise;
The faintest smile could light up your eyes:
I wonder if my untouched lips will dare
To show a hint of happiness to scare
The gravity from your regard; the sighs
Should draw you close to me - or so I hope;
And you will see my pulse leap, when you're close;
As I bare neck and throat, you take the chance
To tie my hands with love and with that rope
To make my colour ebb, you might suppose,
But you'd be wrong: I've perfect confidence.
