A Rather Large War
Step forward
all those willing
to make the supreme sacrifice
How many of you
are prepared
not to pass on your genes
to forgo having children
in order that
sufficient room
is available for
the remainder
of the population
on our planet
How many of you
are willing to be
sterilized at once
in order to ensure
the survival
of our species
How many of you
are prepared to deny
your parents
grandchildren
How many of you
are prepared
to relinquish
motherhood
to never know
that first cry
the moment of birth
first hand
How many of you
big strong guys
are prepared
not to marvel
how the fruit of your loins
never jumps up on you
screaming excitedly:
Daddy, Daddy
I ask how many
because if there
are not enough
we face a lottery for survival
and when that doesn't work
a devastating plague
and a rather large war
will be our only way out
all those willing

1. I have no parenting skills
2. No intrest in gaining aformentioned skills
3. Sub-par genetic structure.

My family has a history of cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, brain problems, etc & I decided a very long time ago never to have children as I would hate to pass these on to someone I would supposedly love. My parents think I'm being absurd & insist that I'll change my mind in the future. Who knows?

Thanks for your great feedback - as ever, Arryn. I suspect your own view on this issue may change many times before you decide. The fact remains that overpopulation is the biggest single issue threatening our species. Please forgive my tardy reply - I was swallowed by holidays. The good news is - they spat me out again!

Although I have not decided that I do not want children this was really well written. My family, like Arryn's has a history of diabetes, and I have a vision disorder (genetic). Very well written. I will be reading your other works.

Thanks coolblue - it's nice to feel I'm getting through to someone. My work is a bit of a mixed bag but if you like this then I'd say avoid the love poems and you should be alright.
