Image for the poem i’m not afraid of death

i’m not afraid of death

i’m not afraid of pain
i’m just afraid of never feeling
i’m not afraid of strain
i’m just afraid of never healing
i’m not afraid to wait
i’m just afraid of never moving
i’m not afraid of hate
i’m just afraid of never loving
for fierce fiends tackle
from outside my breast
but crafty friends deep in bosom rest

i’m not afraid to fight
i’m just afraid of never scoring
i’m not afraid of flight
i’m just afraid of never soaring
i’m not afraid of debt
I’m just afraid of never giving
i’m not afraid of death
i’m just afraid of never living
for fights and flight and debt
and death are naught
except, for fear, i live not as i ought…

Author's Note
I wrote this in tribute to my mother, who celebrated her 105th birthday anniversary on 2018 February 6. Mama's 'lived experience' has taught her everything about life.  She is, consequently, unafraid of pain or strain or the tedium of waiting.  She can handle fights and flights, debt and death, which offer no challenge to one who has lived "as [she] ought."

Deep thoughts from the experience of a centenarian might come in handy as guiding principles for any juvenile who craves the secret formula for a successful life.
