Image for the poem i知 not afraid of death

i知 not afraid of death

i知 not afraid of pain
i知 just afraid of never feeling
i知 not afraid of strain
i知 just afraid of never healing
i知 not afraid to wait
i知 just afraid of never moving
i知 not afraid of hate
i知 just afraid of never loving
for fierce fiends tackle
from outside my breast
but crafty friends deep in bosom rest

i知 not afraid to fight
i知 just afraid of never scoring
i知 not afraid of flight
i知 just afraid of never soaring
i知 not afraid of debt
I知 just afraid of never giving
i知 not afraid of death
i知 just afraid of never living
for fights and flight and debt
and death are naught
except, for fear, i live not as i ought

Author's Note
I wrote this in tribute to my mother, who celebrated her 105th birthday anniversary on 2018 February 6. Mama's 'lived experience' has taught her everything about life. She is, consequently, unafraid of pain or strain or the tedium of waiting. She can handle fights and flights, debt and death, which offer no challenge to one who has lived "as [she] ought."

Deep thoughts from the experience of a centenarian might come in handy as guiding principles for any juvenile who craves the secret formula for a successful life.
