Homeless Man
In the back alley
there lives a man
in a cardboard castle
He parks his shopping cart
right next to it
under a plastic tarp
In this cart he keeps his treasures:
a bag of old clothes,
a box with rusty nails,
a teddy bear, which has lost all his hair,
a bottle full of tears
and a photo of his brother
faded and stained,
an old empty tin can with
marbles, bottle tops and safety pins
a box of cheap donuts
from the 7/11...half full
a foam container with food scraps
given to him by the deli owner
and a blanket for the cold nights to come
If you happen to see that man
from the cardboard castle
take a second
look in his eyes
because they tell
the story
of the world

I often wonder what the homeless dream about when they are sleeping on the street and how sad it must be to wake up to their plight .....

I lived in San Francisco for 11 years, in a neighbourhood where most of the homeless were living in the street. I have never seen such misery in any other "first world" country. Anybody who has lived in the Tenderloin knows this is real. I wrote a short story about it. This was what I saw....

True....and it can happen to everybody under the right circumstances. Someone getting ill, losing a job...it doesn't take much in the US for folks living from pay check to pay check. Some people think it's a matter of being lazy or uneducated. That's BS. Bad things can happen to good people.

Just now came across this piece, Angela... It's wonderful. You really nailed it... any one of us can end up on the street with no place to go.
The attention to detail makes the piece, to my mind... you have managed to evoke an atmosphere without making a issue of it, so the whole comes together seamlessly. Kudos... and well deserved. Ely
