Pride Blinds Biased Eyes
So many have died
And what's it all for?
So that we can live on
To kill so many more?
There are bombs falling
Through the skies of Iraq
Each one is calling
For the freedom they lack
They call out the names
Of innocent young life
The sky fills with flames
Death decapitates strife
The target they sought
Dodged Justice's clinched hand
The soldiers who fought
Liberated the sand
How long will it take
To end this cycle of crime?
We've got all the power
So please unearth the time
No more excuses
War has gone on too long
We want peace not pieces
Before Justice is gone
Why won't you try it
Is your truth based on lies?
Why can't you see it
Has pride blinded your eyes?

Giving Peace A Chance

Another of my peace poems from the GW years. I celebrate the ending of the war in Iraq with a reminder of what war is and why we must never allow our government to wage war without descent. Protesting the actions of those we elect to represent us, when they no longer represent WE the People is our duty as Americans.

Thank you Grace, answers to tough questions are never easy and sometimes those who are unwilling to find the answers use physical force to get their way. Unfortunately, when it's on the scale of nations, the bullying becomes war. We should be better than that. Humans walk this Earth spewing plattitudes, but when it comes time to sit down and use real diplomacy, answers are at a premium and time seems to run out. It boggles my mind, I know people are smarter than that, I am smarter than that and I am not as smart as I think those who have been in power and able to seek the answers are. So why is it easy for so simple a mind as mine to understand what needs to be done, when the supposedly brightest minds in the world can't be bothered to even try to solve our differences. Is it possible that I just don't realize I am the most intelligent being in the universe?

Because... There is no short cut to greatness. Intelligence does not a leader make. Charisma does. and muchos centavos...my dear.

now I finally understand why I am not the leader of the world, I have little cents. There are those who think I have little sense, but that is the one thing I have an abundence of. LOL! Charisma? Hmm, I knew I should have taken less charm and more charisma on the day they were handing those out. Darn my charm, hasn't gotten me any love and if I just had a little more charisma, we might have world peace...

World Peace...Amen to that. Reminds me of the hippie era; Peace+Love=World Brotherhood...and then Vietnam. Speaks volume eh?

Well, the Hippies came later in the 60's but Vietnam was around for several years and many were protesting in the early sixties. Bob Dylan started with protest songs in 1963, the year I was born. I'm not sure what year the Hippies officially came onto the scene, but I think it was 1967. It got really big in 1969 with Woodstock and fizzled as the war in Vietnam was coming to an end right about the time Nixon resigned.
My history is not so great, but I think Vietnam started while Kennedy was President, or maybe shortly before that, but we had just come out of Korea, so I think the wars had more of an impact on creating the hippies as protesting became a full-fledged movement during the sixties. Martin Luther King really lead the way with his non-violent civil rights movement. But as they always do, police often used violence to try to bring an end to the protests. When they killed 4 college students in Ohio, it really drew more attention from the press. It reminds me of what is happening around the world now with the 99%ers. But the cops have been afraid to go too far with everyone making videas with their phones and putting it up on You-Tube even before the press reports it. There have been a couple of videos of police violence against people who did not deserve to be attacked by police and the videos are out there going viral. It's a whole new world with the internet.

This echoes of a reflection of a tender heart, beneath the scars, another great write that has its truth in it.

Re: Re. Pride Blinds Biased Eyes
Thank you! I'm going to have to look that one up. I have written other peace poems, especially during that period... I was actively going on Peace marches and attending rallies and Peace Poetry open mic readings. It was all inspiring me to write more and host my own open mic reading each month.
